Transmission Removal Problem

Hey guys, I have a 96 F-150 with the 4.9l and manual 5 speed. I am in the process of removing the tranny to replace the slave cylinder and clutch. The problem I am having is that with everything disconnected and all the bolts out of the bellhousing, the transmission will not budge! Any ideas? After not working on my own vehicles for a year or so, I am starting to remember why i like working on jets better...... No RUST!!!

Did you pull out 6 b-housing bolts?, and of course, the drive shaft is removed. Is the shifter out also?

Maybe the engine needs some persuasion. Try to jack the front or back of the engine up a little bit to try and keep the engine inline with the direction the tranny's heading.

yeah the 6 bolts are out...the starter is out...the drive shaft is removed. If I grab the tranny and shake the hell out of it side to side, the engine moves with it. Almost like they are seized together. Anyone ever had this happen?

Just like steel bolt going into aluminum. Have you ever broken a starter bolt on a ford? Or spark plug in an aluminum head? Try putting a floor jack under just the transmission.Try to tap on the bellhousig with a hammer.

What we did was put the clutch line back on and pushed in on the clutch to drive them appart. While doing this, we pried with a screwdriver. Don't worry, sometimes they just are tight with any engine/tranny. Be carefull not to put to much pressure, because if it pops, you don't want it coming off and resting on the PP. Good luck.

been there, done that - put a large floor jack under the tranny and raise it so that the weight ofthe engine starts to come off the lift chains, then go tromp on the harmonic - that'll do er

I just did this over the weekend. Jack the back of the engine, with a block of wood under the oil pan. this will raise it with the transmission to help clear the trans cross memeber. After I did that just pryed my trans away from the engine and it slowly moved away til it came apart. Remember to jack the engine when you put it back together. Fred
