OBD-II for diesel excursions

OBD-II for diesel excursions
I normally hangout in the Ranger Forum, but my nephew, who owns a big ole Excursion with a diesel engine, wants to know if his 2001 Excursion supports OBD-II diagnostics. Do they have any emission control systems on those big old hogs? I know he has a diagnostic outlet that looks the same as the one on my Ranger. I have a OBD-II code reader. Where would we find the codes for the Excursion Diesel? Nothing is wrong with his diesel Excursion but he just wants to be prepared.

Thanks for the replies.....I guess I should steer my nephew to this column since he owns the Excursion with the 7.3L diesel power stroke engine. I know nothing about diesels engines, except they clatter like a bunch of bones rattling in a garbage disposal. He's a bass fisherman and travels all over the country to compete in fishing tournaments. His 2000 Excursion pulls that fishing boat like it's not even there. He wanted me to inquire about these microchip tuners and what do they actually accomplish. Are they worth the $495 investment? Are they difficult to install? As I understand them, they come in different HP settings. Do they decrease the fuel mileage? Do you need to install an EGT system to measure the HP? Lots of questions from a know nothing. Thanks in advance.

Yes they are worth it, 5 minutes to reprogram your computer (while saving the factory settings), slight increase in Fuel economy, improved performance of transmission in whatever setting (towing or higher HP/torque), reads OBD codes.
AS for EGT and HP, I think the answer is no. The EGT is useful to make sure when towing you don't punch the turbo into the red zone by lead footing the pedal too much. It's a way to extend the life of the turbo. But the guages are in addition to anything and in actuality should be the first thing added to an excursion other than a sway bar for the rear. You can go to my gallery for pictures of the guages. I tow a 32' travel trailer and rely on the guages to keep me out of too much trouble.
