I'm not really concerned about the new user tag, I'm just glad I found this site. The amount of info is incredible, and I learn something every time I check it out.
Also have NO doubt, none, that if I say something stupid and/or wrong that a lot of people will stomp on me, reguardless of what that little tag claims I am. And that is as it should be.

Still haven't had any one tell me if my 84mph speed limiter is really weird.

Wezard,

That's because we simply don't know.

An E250 with a 4.2 V6 is a new one for me, and I've been on this site for along time. Much longer than my 'Join Date' states. I used to be a member under a different user name. When I changed my username, my dates and counts started over again.

84 seems a little low though. Are you sure it's a speed limiter causing the problem and not something else, like an arc on one of your plug wires or something, or maybe your distributor is having difficulties producing enough amps for that speed due to a malfunction of some kind?

None of us here are familiar with that vehicle computer. The engine may be the same but the computer codes are different.

Which would have been effected if you changed the tire size on your truck or your gear ratio.

Made a trip yesterday. Went 380 mi. The first 270 mi. I was empty but the last 110 mi. I had around 540 lbs. of hardwood flooring in the bed. All highway driving getting 19 MPG.

my 97 4.2 with 95k on it regularly gets 19 mpg hw and 16 mpg in the city. I only use motorcraft sparkplugs, wires and ignition parts. When towing my boat it drops dramatically on the hw to about 15mpg.

Hmm, I have an E-250. Pretty boxy as to aerodynamics! Get about 12.5-13.8 NEVER have gotten above 15 (even with A/C off and steady 60 mph) I can get about 14.7 in that cofiguration. Of course, it does weigh 5500 lbs (that's with me in it and a full tank). I carry about 2500 lbs on a regular basis, still get the same mileage. I have a 3:73 gear set and 245/75-16 E range tires. Oh yeah, also have 162,000 miles on it.

Yea, I should have about 170,000 by next month. I had a 3 litre Aerostar go 277,000 without touching the internals. I'm hoping for the same (still be driving the Aero 'cept for a drunk who tottaled it in my DRIVEWAY) no insurance either!

Suprised to see this thread still alive.
I get crappy milage because
A- it's a BIG van
B- I can't find any aerodynamic ladders for the top
c- My right foot weighs twice as much as my left foot. Since I use the right foot on the gas and the brake it should equal out, but some how it doesn't.
I did finally get my Diablo chip and put it in Mon. night. Haven't gotten thru a full tank of gas yet, but, my feeling is that the increase in milage will offset the cost of premium. I'll let you know when I have hard numbers.
I got a 3 stage, with an 87 octane program just in case.
The Diablo made a big difference in HP, tourqe and most importantly the transmission. It no longer feels like mush, it really does get firmer the more throttle it has.
If you have an automatic, get a chip, no ifs, ands or butts, get one, its worth the price for the transmission alone.
And, the speed limiter is gone!, at least its now over 90 mph, and for me thats gone.

A governor??? Jeez, that explains why I can't pass anything on the highway!! I figured it was aerodynamics and an anemic engine. My trans feels like it's sometimes in 2 gears at once. Some days, runs like a V-10, other days, feels like I'm dragging the world behind me. Mileage remains the same tho!? I use Motorcraft plugs and wires but have a K&N air filter. Pulled the MAF and cleaned it with electrical cleaner (maybe I've over oiled the air filter at times?) still runs the same (mileagae too). I'm looking for a diesel extended van now. The difference in mileage plus the cheaper diesel fuel will save me 5000-6000 bucks a year over the gas engine.
