I have 305/40-22's 5-speed, 3.55 gear. 14-15 intown, 16-17 hwy. Does anyone have a cold air intake and if so did it improve your mpg??

Finally did some numbers after my gear swap.

I'm now getting roughly 17MPG in town driving. Not bad! 4.11 gears and 11' wide tires. I could probably pull 18MPG with smaller tires and an easier foot.

I have yet to see how highway treats me. I do most of my driving in town anyway.

14.6 intown. 15.5 hwy. 305/40-22 size tires, 3.55 rear gear 5-speed. Looks good though. Handles real good.

In the winter its in the 13's.

You get THAT kind of mileage out of a 4.2? Even with the big tires and all that I would have thought you get better than me! That's a surprise. O_o

Well the mpg rating was 15city on the sticker and thats with 255's, or at least thats what the door sticker said was stock. I'd say 14.5 is pretty darn good. I've never had a vehicle that didnt get at least 1mpg less than the rating, I'm within 1mpg average of its factory rating. I do occasionally get 15 but just as often also 14 so the average I consider around 14.5. Thats about 3 miles city streets and 7 miles of highway to work. When I got my truck it had 265's on it, I didnt record any noticeable change in mileage when I went to 285s, and they were approx 40 pounds heavier per corner. That was at about 100,000 mi when I put the new tires on (I put 70,000+ on the tires that came with it when I got it ~30,000!). Currently at about 125k.

I never really thought the 4.2 was a good mileage motor, heck the larger of the V8's nowadays have the highest rating in both ford (5.4) and chevy (5.3) than their smaller v8 and v6 counterparts. I'd only buy a 5.4 today if given the choice, I got my 99 used and back then I was looking as cheap as possible so its just what I found.

I just seen your pic and video of your 4.2. No wonder you only get 14! Mine would too if I had those tires on it. Yours looks sweet.

Milage

I just returned home with a big old Simplicity garden tractor in the back and did 20 mpg. This is in a 97 XLT ext. cab 2wd. with a 5 spd. The engine has about 5000 miles on it now. I averaged about 60 mph and the wind wasn't a factor. I would guess that under ideal conditions 21 or better is a possability.
I'm happy so far.

I have a 2001 LEV 5.4 4X4 with the automatic and I get around 12.5 to 14.5 around town and about 16.5 on the highway at 65. I am currently planning a Troyer efan upgrade and hope to get to 18 on the highway.
