i don't have any modifications, just an engine that was babied, fresh spark plugs, a 5 speed which probably is waaay better on gas than the automatic, shifting at 3000 rpm (with the occasional quick accelerating) and a flowmaster 50 series truck/suv muffler.
i will probably be installing a K&N within the next couple months and see how much that affects the mileage

I have just 3300 miles on the 2003 F150 now and have averaged 18.2. With a highway high of 20.8 at 65 mph running 255 70 16 tires. Not bad!

Ewe boy. 13mpg or less for me guys, with the big tires, heavy automatic truck and poor aerodynamics. I'm so fed up with my mileage that I've just been riding my DR650 to work everyday. At 43mpg, you just can't beat it. Plus I get to work in half the time. Fun as heck too!!
I just bought a 1998 f-150 extra cab, w/ 255/70/16 tires. My gas mileage is very poor, about 11-12 in the city haven't had a chance to test the highway. I thought this was very poor and reading alot of the posts I seem to think I am right. Any thought of why I would get such poor mileage?
If it's an automatic with full power interior and a supercab, then your about right with that mileage. I read an article the other day stating that the Hummer was the worst gas mileage vehicle available and that the EPA was going to crack down on them to do something about it. They then stated that the Hummers avg city mileage was 13mpg!!......uh well, my truck gets worse than that, what about me? I think WE deserve that title and NOT the Hummer.
Stop and go, the supercabs with Auto's get really poor mileage. Too much weight and too much work with the Auto trans for the little 4.2.
Buuuuuttttt........I love her anyway. I just can't drive her everyday anymore. At 140.00 per month in gas alone, that's just too costly.

I took my truck into the dealership the other day complaining about the mileage. After they hooked up their computer to it, they found absolutely no problems. They also noted on their computer that the mpg was responding to 20 mpg at 60 mph with no AC.
Well, let me assure you, I drive about 70mph with the AC and usually get about 15-17 mpg.
I have a 2003 short bed, single cab 4.2 automatic stock with 22K miles on it.
It's a manual transmission. I'm getting this gas mileage without the AC running, I'm afraid to see what it is with the AC.
Would changing the fule filter improve it any?
What point are you trying to make? That the Ford dealers calculation was accurate assuming that their calculation does not take into consideration aerodynamics, angle of terrain, wind speed, vehicle weight and so forth, which is why your getting less gas mileage than what they're telling you?
Or are you saying that Ford was completely off and that you are happy with your mileage? If you were happy with your mileage, then why did you take it to the dealer to have it checked.
No machine, that the dealer can hook your car up to, can tell you what your gas mileage is because the machine cannot compute outside variables, it can only determine how much gasoline the engine alone is using based on a certain rpm and gear. It cannot account for vehicle weight, road quality, terrain level, variable climate, wind speed, aerodynamics and the color tennis shoes i'm wearing
No, red ones. They actually give me an extra 1/2 mpg. The white ones build up too much carbon on the combustion chamber which results in too frequent plug changes. However, in spite of the extremely poor gas mileage the yellow pairs give me, there great for racing because they advance my timing and give me a better 60 foot time in the 1/4 mile. Now green is completely out of the question because of it's flamable characteristics, but they're great on Saint Patricks Day
I was just making a point. Of course, I am not happy with the mpg results I have been getting. I used to have a Lariat Screw with a 5.4 and I was always lead footin it around town and on the highway and I would get about the same mileage I am getting with this 4.2. I don't lead foot this 4.2 and in town I am usually getting 15. 17 and 18 TOPS when I am on the highway doing low 70s.
Maybe I expected too much without knowing enough about the v6 with a much smaller vehicle than the last one I had. I love the truck, it gets me where I want to go without any problems, I just wish i got a bit more mpg out of it. I am looking into chipping it, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on mods just to save a couple of bucks in gas.
