Wiring a 69...

Hi all,

I'm new here, and fairly new to working on Fords. Had a couple of questions. My friend has a 69, that caught on fire. We decided to ditch the voltage regulator, old alternator, etc, and go with a 1-wire alternator (with the internal regulator). The problem is that for now, my friend doesn't have the $$ to re-do his dash/gauges/etc, so I'm trying to piece the old and new together.

Where I'm at now, is with the battery connected, the key will crank the engine over (so I know the starter circuit is connected correctly), but for some reason, it seems like there is hot all the time to the coil, as after a few minutes, the coil gets hot to the touch. This is probably something dumb that I did wrong, but any thoughts on what I did wrong? Should I re-wire the + coil wire into the "Run" position on the ignition switch?

Anyone have a basic wiring diagram for a ford with a 1-wire alternator with otherwise stock ignition setup?

Thanks!

-Aaron

You want the coil connected to the crank and run position with 12v. And then connected through a resistor for the run position. The factory harness has the resistor built in.

If the coil is staying hot with the key off, you have something connected wrong or the ign switch is bad... Need some more info.

Most of the one wire alternator setups are based off of a Delco style alternator. You should be able to run the wire directly to the positive battery terminal (Through the ammeter if you want it to function).
