You want the coil connected to the crank and run position with 12v. And then connected through a resistor for the run position. The factory harness has the resistor built in.
If the coil is staying hot with the key off, you have something connected wrong or the ign switch is bad... Need some more info.
Most of the one wire alternator setups are based off of a Delco style alternator. You should be able to run the wire directly to the positive battery terminal (Through the ammeter if you want it to function).
