Removal of stock radio on 04 F150

I was wondering if anyone out there has tried to remove their 04 head unit yet? I am planning on getting rid of the stock deck and would like to know the easiest way of doing so.

Someone on here posted a link to show the photos of someone else installing a XM radio thingy. I know that showed the radio being removed. It looks pretty easy. I think this is the link, but it looks like it's not working at the moment. May be ok in a few minutes...

I just did it today

open the ashtray

pull on the bezel that surrounds the headunit and HVAC controls, starting from the bottom near the ahstray

6 clips - 2 at bottom near ashtray, 2 half way up, and 2 at the top where it radius's over.
short quick tugs and it will pop out. working from bottom to top

unplug the "airbag off" light's wire harness, and set the bezel down toward the shifter ( center console) with HVAC connectors still attached

then the 1.5 DIN headunit comes out with (4) 7mm screws

good luck

I did this as well, putting a Pioneer single CD deck in. Looks factory with the mounting bracket and wiring harness I got!

Putting in amp and sub box under rear seats tonight!

IT'S EASY!!!!

Kdog250.....

I did it last Friday......and it's a piece of cake. I installed the TERK "Commander", XM Sateliite Radio in my new F-150, and located the control unit in the ashtray housing. It open and closes just as if the ashtray were in place, and looks VERY "factory" installed....as ALL wires and other components are out of sight.

To find out more about removing the factory dash trim, radio, etc., this I STRONGLY suggest you click on the link that lariat F150 provided above. I did, and it was IMMENSELY helpful.

If you or anybody have any questions about how I mounted my XM Commander Control Unit in the ashtray receptacle of my truck, please post them here, and I will answer them as fast as possible.....

Good luck with your install!!!

Fanman-

Did you have to cut the ashtray to place the Commander controller in? Do you have a picture of the finished product?

Thanks

Keep in mind that if you are installing an aftermarket deck, you will need the wiring harness. I tried to get one here in Cow Hamphire last week and no one carries the one for the 04 (evidently it's different than the 03). I had to order one off the net which does cause a delay in the process.
