'76 360

My '76 F100 with 360 2V was built in San Jose, California in 11/75. I am wondering what smog equipment it might haveand would like to eliminate it. In the future I am planning on rebuilding the 360. Should I replace the stock heads or just rework? If I need to replace the heads which heads should I consider and which intake manifold? I plan on using my existing carb or going to a small 4 barrell. My truck has enough power for me now, so I do not require any Hi-performance equipment.

Sorry I cannot be of too much help witht he smog stuff, but my guess is that you will see piping/tubing off of the exhaust manifolds and some other odd things like that running around the intake/exhaust system...

As far as the rebuild, upgrade to the four barrel, add a mild cam and just have your current heads cleaned and inspected. They will probably only cost around $200 for a complete rebuild of them. Much cheaper than having to replace them, especialy if you wanted to go the $1200 aluminum route...

it cost me about $400 to have new seets, valves, heads planned .010, pressure checked and cleaned, thats not includeing the 15 hours i put into porting and polishing the heads.

as for the intake i would go with a edelbrock performer rpm, and find a atleast a 600cfm 4 barrel no smaller.

for a cam i would go with either the crane 343901 or the crane 343941 if you want a bigger cam.

i would also try a set of headers you can get them for under 100 bucks if you look around and they make a worl of difference over the stock logs.

As for smog... remove smog pump and air injectors. The Air injectors are the two pipes with (4) nozzles that screw into each head. When you remove the air injector you will have a total of 8 empty holes to fill. Use screw in brass pipefittings to plug each hole.

A new intake and carb will eliminate most of the other smog related items

Your truck possibly came factory with an air pump with air tubes routed to each exhaust port of the heads. The chances your truck came new equipped with a catalytic convertor are very good also.

You could build your 360 into a 390 along with the plans of installing a 4bbl carburetor and intake and get a good return for your money on hp gain per dollar spent. There are without a doubt lower compression dished pistons in your 360 too. When you rebuild get pistons that will raise the compression ratio a bit more and that will get you more horsepower. Depending on the cam and intake and whether you build the 360 into a 390 the 4bbl carb will need to flow more or less cfm. So be careful not to over or under carb it.

If this 360 is original to this truck then it already has hardened valve seats in the heads. No need to install any since they are already hardened. New valve guides may be needed and the valves may be worn beyond machining especially on the tips of the stems if it is a high mileage engine. Just take the time while taking the engine apart to look for wear on the valves and if they are recessed into the heads from excessive valve seat wear.

Let us know what you find.

I had a hard time finding fittings at Ace and ended up ordering some plugs (Thermactor Hole Plug Kit 390-428) for $15 + S&H from DSC Motorsports that fit right in. I got rid of the air pump and all the fittings as they were disconnected and rotten, same with the exhaust system. I switched to headers and haven't looked back.

Make sure you have all the right vacuum lines and get rid of the excess there too. Two good tools I had was a pair of small bolt cutters to get rid of the air pump lines so I could un-bolt them and a Sawzall to get rid of the exhaust.
