Question 370 to 460 swap

Since the 370 and 460 are in the same engine family, will a 460 be a bolt-in swap for a yucky 370 in an '82 F-600? I've searched shops that have remanufactured engines for sale and noticed that the 460 is actually cheaper than the 370. But there must be some kind of catch for a 370 to cost more than a 460. Is there any difference between these engines besides displacement that would prevent a swap such as this? Since the engine will be pulled anyway, might as well throw in the largest displacement of it's type huh? And I don't even know why Ford used such a small engine in a big truck when they already had the 460. But if for some reason the 460 won't work, can I make a 460 out of my 370 by adding the 460 crank, rods, and pistons and over-bore the block? I just gotta have a 460, this 370 stinks! Thanks for any help.

The 370 has a front motor mount. It's also a lousy candidate for any kind of build up. The heads are crap for one thing.

If you can get the proper motor mount perches to put the 460 in, everything else should just bolt up.

I drove one of those things once, and you are right. They bite.

While the 370 may not be a powerhouse, it is a tough motor. It wasn't built to win races it was built to lug around a 20,000+ truck. Your truck will probably run better with a 460, but I can tell you the 370 is more durable. Ever thought about an industrial 429? Just as durable of a motor with some more cubic inches to satisfy your craving. And it is a direct bolt in swap.

How is the 370 more durable than the 460 since they are basically the same engine? Does it have a four-bolt block, gear-driven cam, or something that would make it a "truck" engine? But if there are reliablity issues, I guess I'll just go with that industrial 429 that you mentioned. Is there a way to put the 460 crank and stuff in that 429? Thought I'd ask.

I think that truck/industrial engines have different cranks somehow, maybe a longer snout or different diameter? I know this same discussion took place on the Network 54 board and the answer was "no."

Industrial engines have steel cranks with a bigger snout. I believe they also have larger valves, but I am not certain of that.
I am not sure about the journal size of the cranks, so I dont know if they can be swapped or not.

I do know that the only difference in a 370 and a 429 is the bore. The cranks can be swapped.
