How to check codes?

how do i check codes without a voltmeter? i heard people talk about the paper clip method?

You don't even need a voltmeter, all you have to do is jump two connectors and read the check engine light. Read this: http://www.broncodata.com/tech/codes.htm

Idid what the direction said but i get no flashing of engine light it just stays on, also no blinking of test light, help!

I bought a hand held unit from the local parts srore. It is only a simple one, but only cost like 25$ and it came with a book. It does the codes and a running test.

Are you sure you're jumping the right two connectors?
