Ford went from the X block to to Y in February, 1977.

For the month of February 1977, VINs were Y00,000 - Y19,999.

March 1977 = Y20,000 and up.

Anything assembled after 3/77 (easy way is to look at the safety certification label, but not foolproof) was not a highboy.

Why would the F-250s be the only highboys? Why not F-350s? And while I'm at it why not the 150s? And if 77.5 is the last high boy when was the first? My uncle has a 1970 F-250 4x4 4-speed, 360 and I think thats a highboy.
I had a 1975 or 1976 F-250 4x4 auto, full time, divorced transfter case, low pinion front axle and drum brakes. It had a 360 but it was locked up. I bought it for $200 and sold it to my uncle for $200. He has not done anything with it. I'd kinda like to get it back. He also has a totally rusted out (to the point it's not safe) 1967 Galaxie 4 door with a 390 that runs, he only paid $100 for that. I'd like to get that 390 for the truck.
Anyway the truck I am mentioning above is a high boy correct?
Where all high boys front drum? Enclosed knuckle?
It seems like a lot of people think the high boy is better but I disagree completely. The after 77.5 trucks are leaps and bounds ahead of the older ones. Is a high boy even much higher? I can't notice. Seems like thats why some people say they are better.

Ford did not offer a F-350 4x4 until 1979.All highboys from 1973 thru 1975 had Dana 44 6CF or Dana 44 6CF-HD closed knuckle low pinion drum brake front axles. The 3300 lb 446CF used the internal lockouts identical to F-150 and Bronco and the 3550 lb 446CF-HD used the Spicer external "Big Hubs". Starting in 1976 the D44 was still low pinion but were open knuckle and equipped with disc brakes.I have owned (3) Highboys and parted out many more and have never seen one that didn't have a divorced transfer case! 1973 thru 1975 F-250 crewcabs were available with a Dana 60 closed knuckle front axle(very rare).I have one of them! They used the same outer axle, knuckle, lockout, and brakes as the D446CF-HD but had small 30 spline inner axle shaft-same as D44.1978 and 1979 F-250 and 1979 F-350 were equipped with reverse bevel gearsets so the pinion could be moved to the drive side of the ring gear(High pinion).Low pinion axles are basically a rear axle spun around and drive on the weaker coast side of the gearset. At the time FORD was the only manufacturer to offer high pinion axles!A lot of guys call the high pinion axles "reverse rotation"-they are not reverse rotation but reverse bevel. They still turn the same direction!

F100/250 4WD's were not available with disc brakes until 1976.

Which F250 4WD's are High Boy's?

The term (not Ford's) was originally coined for 1973/77 F250 4WD's (before #Y20,001), but the 1967/72 F250 4WD's are basically the same truck, so they are also called High Boy's.

The term Hi-Boy was originally coined by hot rodders to refer to 1932 Ford roadsters with the fenders and splash shields removed, exposing the body riding high on top of the frame rails

My 77 f250 4x4 has a dana 44-9f. Does that mean it is a 1977.5?

I believe the Dana 44-9f is the HP44 used on the '77.5-'79's.

Need Disc Brakes for my 1973 F250 High Boy 4X4

I found a 1979 Ford F250 NOT 4x4

Question 1
Will the Disc Brakes from this 1979 NON 4x4 fit my 1973 High Boy 4x4?

Question 2
Will the Automatic steering colum from the 1979 bolt in and replace my manual 4 speed colum High Boy?

Thanks

2 questions

1. Will the disc brakes from the 1979 coil spring front end fit my 1973 High Boy?

2. Will the Automatic steering column from the 1979 F250 bolt in and replace the manual steering column in my 1973 High Boy?

Thanks

The disk brake/rotor from a (coil spring front end) will be F150, 1/2 ton, 5 on 5 1/2, 5 lug nuts and have a single piston brake caliper.

Your 73 is a F250, 3/4 ton, 8 on 6 1/2, 8 lug, I am not sure it is will fit, but the disk brake from a 79 F250 will be the lug pattern you need and have a 2 piston brake caliper.

79 steering column will probably have a different elec connector (18 pin?) on the steering column than the 73.

The truck that I would get the disc brakes from is. A. 1979
F 250 with coli springs up front and 8 lug wheels it's not 4x4
I saw it myself
So what do you think?
I appreciate your comments
Thanks

mecone asked a new question, so who cares how old the original thread is....the 79 F250 is a 2wd so you are wanting to know if you can put a 2wd disk brake rotor on a none disk brake rotor/hub? And transfer the disk brake caliper system?

I do not know if the the 2wd disk brake rotor will go on a 4wd hub? I believe there is quite a difference in them and there for it will not work.

The 4x2 rotor would have the bearing/hub assembly machined as part of the rotor. So no it definitely would not work.
