Question Cutting front springs for Mustang 11

Does anyone have a rough idea for how much coil I will need to cut from my heavy duty springs in my 53 ford with a 390 and c-6 to install.I was hoping to get close now while I have a plasma cutter sitting at the house. Thanks and happy new year All. DJ

DJ,

How much lower do you want to go from where you are now, or have you even installed them yet? I've cut MII springs before and it's very easy to cut too much. I know it's a pain in the butt, but I wouldn't cut more than one coil and then try them. The spring rate is going to change when you shorten them. If you think you are close after one coil, just go 1/2 coil at a time after that. A better idea would be to call A-1 Springs or a similar company and tell them what you have and order new springs just for your application. Cut coils hardly ever work out well and it takes a lot of trial and error to get them right. You used to be able to buy new coils for about $70 a pair (probably gone up now) and chances are you will have the right setup the first time.

How low are you trying to go? I have a 56 with M11 and a 390. It sits at a nice low stance with stock coils. I think the 2" drop spindles might make it too low. Probably couldnt even get a floor jack under it then. Just my opinion.

Why cut springs, mustange II came with 4, 6 & 8 cyls. If you have a front end out or a 6 or 8 you may just have to put in used 4 cyl springs.

Your lower control arm has to be level with the world. I fit is not you will get poor front suspension caracteristics. My 58 F-100 with a 302 and the old stock '76 4 cyl springs I had to cut a coil and a half to get it right. The must II's had a lot of weight on the front end compared to our old trucks. Good luck

If you look at my pics in the gallery (fraim painting) you will see i have about 6 to 8 inches to travel down until level with the ground. My son and I stood on the front of the truck frame and came in at a combined 450 lbs and I still have an inch or two for level, which with the fenders and hood i hope will be about perfect. Cross my fingers.
