1988 Ranger Oil Pressure

My friends Ranger idles at 4lbs of oil pressure and drives at 8lbs. Is this normal? Replace pump or is there a blockage on the screen?

I think that also, but what is the easiest way to clean? Motor has to be pulled to change it doesn't it?

Put another guage on it to check the pressure. If it really is 4 and 8, I wouldn't drive it until the pressure was up. You should have at least 25-30 lbs. Could be a plugged screen, bad oil pump, or worse-cam or main bearings. Try the guage first. (Assuming the oil level is full!)

Try about 1 qt of Marvels Mystery Oil in the crank case and see what happens, i put some in and my oil pressure went back up to normal, now its starting to go back down tho, i should change the oil to get all the gunk out,

Besides changing the oil how would I clean the screen? Someone suggested pouring kerosene in the motor. I told him not to. Sounds destructive. Is the pump hard to change out? It is a 2.3L. Pull motor???

There was somting about using a coat hanger through the oil drain for the 4.0, and i know the 4.0 you have to pull to drop the oil pan, at least thats what i've heard, sorry i dont have any info on your 2.3L maybe since its a smaller motor you wouldnt have to pull it to drop the pan, i'm not completely sure, sorry, somone will be along who knows for sure

On one of the old Ranger boards they used an old distributor shaft to turn the pump backwards with a solvent in the pan.

No it doesn't, you can use a cherrypicker or something like it to lift the motor high enough for oil pan to clear. The promblem your'e probally having is the oil pan gasket is of cork and over the years it has broken down and it is clogging up the screen in the pickup tube. Remove the motor mount bolt so you can lift the motor, remove oil pan, look at the opening in the pickup tube to see if the screen is clogged. If it is remove it and clean it or replace it.If you desire replace the pump as well your choice. Replace the new oil pan gasket with the new rubber one offered. Hope this is of some help keep us posted as to your finds or decisions. Good Luck...
