97 F150 4x4 Low Indicator light
4.6l, about 80,000k. Electronic (dial on dash) 4x4 switch. This is an intermitent problem, increasing in regularity. The 4x4 low indicator light goes on, or flashes (like a short) for a while, and then stops for a while. It doesn't seem to actually be engaging the 4x4. Aside from driving me crazy and making my heart rate climb, it didn't seem to pose a problem.
My wife called me today to say it did the same to her, and she said it jerked as if it did engage. I asked her if it seemed to keep her from accelerating. She said it did.
The local Ford dealer will run the codes tomorrow and check the 4x4. They said it might be the electronic shift or a short in the wires going to them. Since I'd rather not spend the $65 diagnostic fee if I can help it, I was wondering if anyone else might know the problem.
For instance, the WD-40 in the door trick worked great to clean my dome light/door ajar sensors.
Thanks!

Hi Elktrekker and welcome to FTE
I think your dealer is probably right about the 4x4 shift motor on the transfer case. it could also be the 4x4 lockout switch on the transfer case. Less likely would be a GEM or wiring problem.
Hopefully they will have the answer after scanning it for you. I think that's your next step.
