The 2WD BIIs utilize a BW 10-59 Transfer case which is sort of a "non" transfer case. There is a splined sleeve directly connecting the input shaft to the RW output shaft. There are no sprockets or chain and it contains no lubricant. I guess it was more cost eficient to use the empty case as an adaptor from the tranny to the rear driveshaft than to make up a new tailshaft housing, tailshaft and longer driveshaft. I guess it would make the conversion of a 2WD to 4WD not too big a hassle!?
