Post gas mileage of a 460

Now here is a topic that has been done and done to death. But I must admit the search function is hard to use so here we go. I currently drive a 1993 F-250 supercab with a manual transmission, 4 wheel drive and 4.10 rear end. On the highway at a steady 70, on its' best day it gets 13 mpg. Around town it is 8 to 9 mpg. This is my third Ford truck with this drivetrain and they have all been about that fuel efficient. The 460 is not the engine of choice for those who worry about fuel costs. Life is very short, drive what you like.

My '74 460 and my '85 460 both got 8-9 mpg no matter how I drove them.

gas mileage of a 460

I just sold my 93 F-350 CC 4WD 410 gears. I got 7 MPH pulling my Jeep on a 16' trailer. The best I got was 12.8 MPG driving 55 mph totally empty.

I have a 2002 Powerstroke & LOVE the fuel mileage

My dad used to say his Ford van he had with a 460 would pass anything except a gas station!

gas mileage of a 460

I've driven a 460 powered truck since 1978 and I have never had one that got any worse gas mileage than a 351. As a matter of fact, I had one of the first 351 ho that Ford offered in 1984 in a F150 that got 8 in town and 10 on the highway.

But to answer your question, I still have a 97 F250 S/C 4x4 auto 460 efi 4:10 and since day one it has gotten 11.5 in town and 13.5 on the highway. (Hwy is at 70-80 mph). The truck now has 164,000 miles on it and the only repair was a cracked exhaust manifold, and transmission.(transmission replaced at 35,000).

I have a new model Superduty c/c with V10 auto 3:73 with 49,000 miles and it gets 12-13 in town and as much as 15 on the highway, but I still question how much power it truly has compared to the old 460's.

Get the 460, you won't be sorry.

gas mileage of a 460

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 10:20 PM (EST)]The best I have done with my 96,5spd.,4x4,3.55 to 1 gears is 14.25 mpg.I drove a steady 70mph.from Cincinnati to Detroit and back. The worst was 9.6 towing a 28ft.camper,(approx.6500lbs.)loaded with stuff on a trip from Cincinnati through Va. and back.I ran fast and hard through a lot of hilly country on that trip.
It averages a tad over 10mpg.most of the time towing.I usually get about 12mpg.just driving around and can get 13mpg.if I drive easy.

My header and exhaust equipped 460 was stronger than my stock 02 V-10.That was until I added headers, exhaust, and a chip to the V-10.

'86 F-350, 4x4, 4 speed manual, four inch lift, 33" tires. I get 10mpg, thats combined highway and stop and go. It's got two tanks for a reason. But it will pull anything I can hitch it to, or carry anything I can fill the bed with, and it sounds great. True dual exhaust, no cat, dual glasspacks. Sounds like a flock of Harleys in close formation.:+
