Question Engine started "clanging"

It's currently storming outside right now so I can't trouble shoot the problem today so I thought I'd post to see if anyone can help.
Yesterday while cruising at 2500 rpm down the highway a a very lound "clanging" noise developed...like a can of marbles rattling in a can. I pulled over, popped the hood and listen and it sounded that it was coming from the passenger side. I decided to limp to a gas station. The noise was most noticeable at 2K rpm but not in the lower range. I decided to drive it home, some 100 miles away, keeping it below 2K rpm...and about 30 miles down the road the loud noise stopped. I drove the rest of the way at 2500 rpm and the noise didn't return.
The engine is an '86 6.9, C6 trans. with 90K miles and 4:10 rear end..doesn't smoke and until yesterday have purred. Any ideas????

I had a problem like that and caused my heart to drop. It turned out to be the vacuum pump on its way south. Maybe something to consider.

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking in the Chilton manual but don't see a vacuum pump. Would it be the injection pump? I'll check it out when these storms passes.... weatherman says after the New Year.

The vacuum pump is right below the alternator. It has a belt going to it from the alternator.

Make sure that is the noise because they are not cheap.

when all else fails. Open the high pressure line to each injector one at a time. this will take the firing pressure off of the cylinder that you have opened the line on. Due this to each of the eight cylinders if the noise goes away when one of the injector lines is loosened. you have big problems in the loweer end or a piston has gone away.
