I have a 1997 F150 4x2 LWB 4.2L V6 (149,000 miles) I am preventitive maintenance junkie and pamper this thing. The other day on a long trip (300+ miles) I started haveing the problem of the oil pressure guage bouncing then bottoming out. The oil pressure light would come on, and then when I would give it gas or put it in Park the oil pressure would return to normal. As the trip went on I developed a knock and a rattle that sounds similar to a heat shield when I get on the gas at about 55mph or on hills. I am going to try running heavier oil and see if this helps. The only thing i could think of is the oil pump or the spring in it is bad. Any advice.
Truck is clean, Oil was just changed, no other work done at all other than prev. maintenance, and a K and N air filter. Also am having the problem of headlight dimmer, heater/ac temperate switch wearing out. I already had to replace the signal arm/wiper/high beam on the steering column (65 dollar cheap fix). Other than that its been a perfect truck and If this oil pressure deal is a do it yourself project under 200 bucks Ill stay a happy soldier.
