2002 F-250 5.4 Gas mileage

Hello everyone. I have a question about the gas mileage for my truck. It's a 2002 F-250 S/C 4x4 5.4liter engine with 3.73 gears and automatic tranny. The truck has 4400 miles on it and gets terrible gas mileage. When I first road trip with 500 miles on the odometer got it got almost 18mpg on the highway. Now the truck has been getting around 7 to 8mpg around town (light foot) and 11 mpg on the highway 65 to 75mph. Just wondering what everyone else is getting on their trucks. Also if anyone has had the same problem with fuel economy as I do has the dealer fixed it and what did they do to correct the problem. I appreciate any answers you guy's might have. Thanks, I love the truck but hate the gas mileage.

Got the 2001 F250 5.4 with 4.10 gear and get a steady 13 to 14 in town with easy driving; maybe 15 on the highway driving 70 and under.

I have the manual with 4.10 gears. I got (before the off-road tires) 13 city\highway every time. But I drive 75-80 on the highway.

2002 F-250 5.4 Gas mileage

I work at the local tech college, we have a auto repair program that is second to none. If you have the guts they will go through your vehicle labor free for teaching the students. Parts of course are extra. They have won numberous state and nation wide awards for their expertise. Ok, enough of the commercial, what I want to get to is they are going through my 5.4V8, F250 4X4 etc on Monday. We are going to drain all gear boxes and replace with Amsoil synthetic, the motor will get the same, they also said something about a firmware upgrade for mileage (hmmm). Everything including computer readouts will be looked over to see if there is anything that can be done. I will post after I get it back and take it through the paces to see what it took to squeeze a few more miles out of it. According to the instructor I should be getting at least three to four miles better than I am now. Eight in town and around eleven on the highway. Which means I should get around twelve city 14-16 highway. I could live with that. Single figure gas mileage.......eehhhhhhhhhhh! Should have something by this time next week.

2002 F-250 5.4 Gas mileage

It seems that the fuel filter was so plugged we couldn't even blow air through it. The fuel pump on this thing had to have been working over time. Mileage seems to have gone up, they say it's because of the fuel filter. I'm having a hard to understanding this one. Everything else checked out ok, throtle response is much better. I always thought when a fuel filter went bad(plugged) the vehicle would no longer run. Maybe someone here can explain why the mileage and the throtle response would be better only because of a plugged fuel filter. By the way it seemed to run fine before, I took it in for the mileage problem. Idle and everything else seemed normal, smooth.
