Swapped 3.0L A4LD in my 4.0L AeroStar, now have overdrive vibration??
I have 2 Aerostars.
1 3.0L, blown headgasket, good A4LD, 3.73 gears.
1 4.0L, bad trans, 3.27 gears.
I swapped the 3.0L trans into the 4.0L van. Converter and all. (didn't want any bad junk from the 4.0L trans trashing the good 3.0L trans)
Transmisson shifted and drove fine in the 3.0L van, so we put it in the 4.0L van till I get the transmission rebuilt.
Now, the transmission has a vibration in overdrive when i decelerate, and at slow speeds in reverse, almost like it is binding or something.
Any thoughts on what might be going on? I did have to change the bellhousings, but that seemed straightforward.
Yes, it does stall at a higher rpm than the 4.0L or the 3.0L van did. But it is not objectionable.
Am I having a problem with the calibration of the trans for 3.73's and a 3.0L with it in the 4.0L van with 3.27 gears? Why the vibration. It is fairly rough. In Drive, there is nothing to complain about at all. Just in OD and when driving slow in reverse.
Thanks!

So far I've been lucky and haven't had any transmission problems, but I have had to replace my U-joints (92 3.0L 2wd).
I don't know what problems you may have related to changing the trans from a 3.0L to 4.0L setup, but it seems to me that I remember reading a post on this forum that indicated that you need to be sure that the dirveshaft(s) is/are installed correctly balanced to the rearend/transmission. I guess that's why when you remove the driveshaft(s) you have to mark the driveshaft and the case so you reinstall it in the same position.
Also, I seem to remember something about the tranmission cases being milled to match or align properly, but exactly to what or why I don't recall. I'd recommend searching this forum for any posts related to the a4ld transmission.

I guess I will give it a try. The problem only occurs in reverse going slow (5mph or less) and in OD under deceleration. I would expect driveline phasing to be occur at all speeds/gears.
But I did not check the phasing when I pulled the aluminum shaft out (nice one I might add). I will try to rotate it 1/4 and drive again until I am all around or it is fixed. Don't have much else to try!
