hey i have a 1993 f350 turbo desil (not power stroke)
and need to replace a fly wheel and want to know the pros and cons on a solid flywheel and a not solid flywheel
I have a question tankbuilder.I have a 1989 7.3 with a 5-spd.I know that the flywheel is out but what I want to know is would that make the starter go out?
Definatly go to solid. Changed to a solid at 185,000 miles & the only con is the one with the springs absorb a lot of drive train vibration so now when my truck is under a load in low gears it sound like a big rig. Before I changed the original out the truck had a really bad vibration at idle because of the worn out springs.
Buy it together as a clutch/flywheel kit. If you change to a solid flywheel you have to change the clutch because it is different. I got mine for under $500 & just a dual mass flywheel was priced @ $1000.

dear 68back, I don't think so because I never had any starter trouble. The solid flywheel you should look for is a Luk. That is the brand.
The flywheel is pretty gone,we drove it that way for quite a while. The rig has been parked for several years now because of it.I still take it down the road every now and then,I just have to pull-start it.Now with this new info,I just need to save up forthe new flywheel and clutch and starter.
68 back
I just put a 7.3 IDI turbo in my 86 F250...used the solid flywheel off my 86 6.9 with a new LUK clutch and pressure plate. Clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing was only about $175. from Ford. Everything is working well so far. Your 89 should have a solid flywheel in it also unless I am mistaken.
