how do i get that sound?

ok mustangs sound awesome, and its the only car I know that sounds the way it does, ok its got a 302 but, so does my truck. so lets slap some long tubes 2.25 exh pipes and some flowmasters and boom should sound the same right! nope! I know this much as far as how the enginens differ.
1. 302 firing order vs. 351
2. bank fired vs. sequential ingection.
3. different exhaust configuration.
4. different cam profiles
5. roller vs flat
So what is it? what gives that sound?
how can I get my truck to sound more like that!

So who makes an h or x pipe for an 02 4.6? I have been looking and cannot find ayone that has one for my application. Do you have to go with a mustang and then fabricate it under the body, since there isn't much room for anything on the left side anymore? please help, would really like to do this. thanks

i know it is hard to pu duel pipes on a newer truck but all you have to do is route both pipe to one side then back to the left sounds strange but that about the only way i can think of to do it

any muffler shop can make a pipe for you. on a small block, if your running a catylitic converter, you can get that sound by not useing a muffler and running the pipes out the back , is your fuel tank on the side of your bed or under the back ? If its in the back you can run straight back. Do you have two cats? on the years that had two , leave the mufflers off . you can also use something called a cherry bomb to tone the sound down if its to raspy . I did a little custom exhaust work a few years ago , quite a fewq actually, good luck Bob

I am going to run high-flow cats with an h-pipe and the super flow 40 series flowmaster (the new ones). I will have the pipes dumped right after the mufflers too. I am wanting the best sounding and best performance out the pipes. I just didn't know if I was not seeing an h-pipe for trucks or if I was going to have to go with a mustang and modify it. It will be done at a muffler shop near by me that does excellent work, so they might even have a better set-up then what I plan on doing. If they do I will inform everyone here. Thanks for all the input and help.

Always think a stock motor sounds like crap w/o mufflers. Only like that sound out of a race car or dragster. Never would take off mufflers on my truck. Can't you blow a head gasket too if that back pressure is too much on open pipes with no cats?

no if the pipe is real short like 12 inches or less away from the manifold it can burn the exhaust valves

there was a guy here in town that thought he would be cool running open headers on a 427 camaro, and ended up burning the valves out of the freshly rebuilt 427.

not to discourage you from playing with the exhaust, actually i encourage it...lol....
just wanted to throw in, the engine makes the noise, so most times mustangs sound better due to cam selection and the performance of the car from stuff like maf, injectors, computer etc...but exhaust is just as fun and most time just as ...and always a good way to get looks. you should have no problems if you go with a catback system, i got rid of the cat my self with no prob. i have duals with a cam though, it is meannnnn....
