How much power do you need? My old 460 has plenty for me. IF it had anymore, I think it would break something! All these HP wars just drives up the price of vehicles. I would rather see the big three automakers focus on reliability, useabilty, more than just putting out #'s. I also love my 300-6 motor. It is easy to work on and plenty of smooth torque down low. Yes change is good but where is it going to end? How much power does the average guy need? Pretty soon they will start putting CAT V-12's in pickups!

I've driven all three automakers deisels. The Dodge is gutsy, the tranny (a manual) was clutsy.

The Ford was powerful but clacked and clicked almost as bad as the Dodge...the noise level was awful.

The Chevy (an older 6.5 turbo) had good power and was quiet, but nowhere near the power of the Powerstroke in the Ford.

Then...I drove a Duramax. Wow. These are some fine engines. Gobs of torque with a torque curve that seems as flat as a pancake. Need torque at 10MPH?...Got it. Need torque at 60MPH?...Got it.

All this AND...you can still hear the radio.

I dunno guys...I think Furd may be in trouble with this one...

Ford doesn't need to up the anty yet.The duracrap is 310@3100 that is right at red line. The only thing going is the 590 at 1600 but I'd like to see a dyno sheet on that motor first.

Ford has plenty to worry about... at least the Duramax is reliable unlike the 6.0. Let the 6.0 owners begin Flaming begin now.

Wait a minute...there is another thread in this forum about horsepower vs. torque. You Furd fellers are consistently saying that torque is more important than horsepower (since GM normally whoops up on ya in that department) and that it should be low in the RPM band for a truck. Now your saying the DuraCrap is essentially no threat??????

What am I missing in this discussion????

not to rain on my own parade.... but the ford peak hp is right about redline too....3300. tq is rated at 2k, but i think it is more likely 2200 or so. i would also like to see dyno gfraphs on all three.
the cummins is the big boy, even after generic motors attempt to gain market share. i personally do not feel that gm increasing the power of the duramax will make very big strides in market share capture, more likely it will keep gm faithfulls from looking at other trucks, which is a step in the right direction

The redline on my truck says about 4300. All I'm saying is that if you have to redline the truck to achieve peak performance than that can't be too good for the motor--- right?

AGREED, BUT FUEL SHUTOFF ON YOUR MOTOR SHOULD OCCUR AT ~3600...woops, caps.

anyhoo, you cannot hit 4200 redline on the tach unless you downshift while traveling too fast....kinda ghey on fords part to make the actual redline hard to distinguish...have to read your manual to find that out.

ya I know about the rev limiter but 3600 is not redline. So you wouldn't be hurting your motor. 3100 is the redline on the duramax, I'm not sure what redline is on the cummins.

It is strange that the Duramax sounds like such a good Diesel, yet I never see a Duramax Chevrolet at all. Are they expensive? I personally don't like the engine after test driving one and having the entire car shut down because of the water seperator failing...

I see tons of dmax Chevy's around here and pretty much everywhere I drive. I believe redline on mine was 3300. All I can get out of my 6.0PSD is 3600. I still don't understand why the redline on the tach is so much above what is actually possible on the 6.0. Must just be more marketing garbage.

Jeb,

What did you think of the Duramax? How does the 6.0 compare to it? Will the boost in HP for the Duramax make a difference in your opinion?

Thanks.

i work at a chevy dealer....i see duramax's all the time...see em on the road as well, but not anywhere near as often as SD's around these parts.

the duramax/allison combo is a $7400.00 option, and MANY people will not ante up for it.

my window sticker said....
psd: 5085.00
t/q shift: 1480.00
$6565.00, so the ford is nearly a grand LESS....
