Unhappy Gas Mileage on FE's

Whay doe severy one think that FE's are so hard on gas?
I have 5 of them 352, (2 360's), 390, and 428. I have never gotten worse than 15mi/gal with any of them. (driving reasonably)

65f100CoryE., that is pretty good mileage...but I don't doubt that it can't be done. What transmissions do these trucks have in them. My 390 gets about 10 mpg, but I also think that part of my problem is the C-6 wastes some of the power. Do you have any tricks (besides a good tune-up) for getting better mileage out of an FE?

Thanks

Cory, you must be using some of that Enron math. I've never gotten 15 MPG in any FE powered ford. 352, 360, 390 and don't even think about this 428 stroker.

What gears are you guys running? I might have gotten close to 15MPG in my 68 F100 with the 360 and dual exhaust.

Both my newer trucks are F250s with 4.10:1 gears....They are humming on the highway at about 3400 RPM. Gulp Gulp Gulp

Well I will start with the Ltd I had, since it would be the most difficult to believe.
It was a 390 4bbl I used 1 step up from an RV cam and (comparable to the CJ cam)
I had 2 1/4 dual with short glass packs. It was a C6 tranny, I am not 100% what the gears
were but they were really great on the hiway @ 75Mi/Hr the tach was barely touching 2200rpm.

My 65 is 3.25 gears with NP435 4spd I use P275 60R15 tires 2 1/4 dual with strait pipes
9.5:1 compression with decent cam .512lift .538 lift 292/302 durration.
factory style motorcraft 4300 4bbl.

I am not sure what the deal is. I know free flowing exhaust is a must.
As for the "enron math" maybe the calcs are different in canada
4.54 instead of 3.7L / Gal helps I think too.

I know that I can get just around 270Miles on the tank in my 65.

Aw c'mon Gtex,

We still use slide rules here in WY, so I know my math is right. Before I tore this project truck apart I commonly got 15mpg. 76 F250, 390, 4.10, 35" BFG's at about 2650rpm cruise. And that is at 7000 feet!

Before I bought truck from my in-law's( many years ago, in fact I have owned it longer then they did) they said they got 15-16 mpg..I natually upgraded the cam, intake, carb., ign., and exhust right away and have been getting 10mpg since, of course I drive a little different then they did..LOL..This is a 74 F100 360 4x4 (man. hubs) 4sp 3.50 gears and 31" tires..

I used to get 15-18mpg@65mph outta my 72 390 w/600cfm holley when it had 3.54 gears.... believe it or not

adjusted brakes, nice wheel bearings, tight driveline, adjusted carb, and decent ignition system will keep an Fe above the 10mpg mark atleast.

I get about 4mpg with my 390. This is short trips in cold weather with 10-15 minutes of idle warm up (-20 deg out). There is also a little snow plowing thrown in there too. I am glad to hear that I might be able to get 10mpg next summer.

I get avg 12 with mine. It has 3.25 gears and a toploader 4spd hooked to a stock 352(750 holley). It got 11 with autolite 2bbl.

I run it around 3000 rpm on the highway(275/15 BFG) to keep up with traffic(around 70 mph). I know if I would cool it a bit I might get 1-2 more. Can't do that though.

Scouder,

Although your 35s carry a bit more weight, they are making your 4.10s look something like a 3.45:1 gear ratio. Throw some 255-70r16s on there and see what happens to our highway RPM and gas mileage.
