Timing

This past summer I put in some new plugs, wires, belts, hoses, etc on mt '95 F150. Thought I'd check the timing while I was at it. I marked the timing mark with chalk, hooked up the timing light, pulled the SPOUT connector, and fired it up (it was already warmed up). I could not get the timing mark to appear in the light no matter how far I turned the distributer. I finally set it by ear and put everything back like it was, and took it to my mechanic. I had to leave it, so was not able to see what he did. He's gone now and I am not able to ask him.

So, my question finally is, How do you set the timing on this (300 six, 5 spd OD)?

the propper timing mark is on the left side of the engine looking at it from the front. Not the right. Kind of hard to see. I had the same thing till I found the correct mark.
