I'm confused (turn signals)

I have a "rapid blink" when I engage the right turn signal. It doesn't do it all the time. When I checked it, the rear was bllinking and the front appeared to be out. Changed the right front bulb, but the problem didn't go away. So, I changed the rear bulb. Still didn't cure it. Now I'm confused. I thought for sure "rapid blink" was caused by a bad bulb. What else could it be, Flasher unit? Bad ground?

It's most likely the multi function switch. Either the terminals are loose or the contacts are dirty. You can take it apart and clean it if you're mechanical. Otherwise, you're better off buying a new one.

Is the multi-fiunction switch the one in the steering column? If it is, can I change it without pulling the Steering wheel?

The multi function switch is the trun signal/wiper switch.

It's not too difficult at all to remove. But to disassemble, clean and put it back together can be tricky. You need to remove the steering wheel shroud, top and botton, and also the ignition cylinder. The multi function switch is also held in place with torx (star) bolts in case you don't have the right tools.

There are 2-3 phillips head srews in the lower shround and then a hole down there that leads to the ignition cylinder. To remove the cylinder, disconnect the battery and turn the ignition to RUN. Then insert something up into the hole to depress the spring and pull the cylinder out. You also need to unscrew and remove the tilt steering lever.

You don't need to remove the steering wheel or mess with the air bag.

No the wheel has to come off. Also disconnect the battery because you could set off the air bag. Did you check the connections at the bulbs? They can get loose and cause this. Good luck.

hmmmm.... Mine sure didn't have to come off and the Ford service manual doesn't include removing the steering wheel to replace the multi function switch.

Thanks for the "step-by-step" instructions. I especially appreciate the reminder about disconnecting the battery. I'm sure that setting off the air bag would not have crossed my mind. I guess I'll see about ordering a switch.

I just drove the truck and noticed that if I engage the lane change turn signal without going all the way into the detent, it seems to work fine. Makes me think that you're right on with the switch diagnosis.

My only other question is: In step 4 above, where are the 4 clips for the steering column opening cover located?

That is a really weird instruction because when you remove the screws, you just have to pull up on the upper part of the shroud cover and the clips release without effort.

You'll figure it out. It comes apart quite easily.

Aj
I changed the switch this weekend. Much easier than I would have anticipated. Without your help I would have never thought it was a "do it yourself" job. Thanks

Joe
