2.9 valve adjustment

Hi!

I've run my newly assembled 2.9 for about 20 minutes.
There's a little lifter noise. I just found out that
these hydraulics actually require an initial adjustment,
which is sort of odd.

Anyhoo, the instructions say to get the rockers to neutral
lash (no play, nor binding) and then to "turn in" 1.5 turns.

Doesn't make sense to me! With the lifters bled out, the
valve assembly is supposed to have 1.5 turns TIGHTER?
How can the valves seat, especially after the lifters
pressurize?

Obviously they must mean to "back off" or LOOSEN 1.5 turns?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Cheers, Jeff

No the lifters ahould already be pumped up. You take all the slack out of the valvetrain, "Zero Lash" but that does not mean you are compressing the plungers all the way down in the lifter. Zero lash is when ther is no longer any slop/up and down movement, but the lifter isnt under load either. Then the 1.5 turns is to preload the hydralic lifter, so than in theory, it is depresed a little, but still has some travel left, but is also has room left to "expand" to take up a growth in the lash of the valve train.

Was that nice and confusing?

Thank you for your reply!

No, it does make sense-- I had assumed that the hydraulics
bled down quickly, and that I was adjusting when the lifters
were already bottomed out.
I wonder how long they take to bleed down?
(I've always worked with solid lifters!)

Cheers, Jeff

Jeff, found your old post. Any update? did you manage to set the lash correctly? 1.5 turn in or out? Old car, old lifters, worn cam etc... It seems that the lifters leak fast enough to make this adjustment senseless.

re: 2.9 valve adjustment

Yes, they should be turned in, or preloaded, 1.5 turns.

Cheers, Jeff
