99 F250 Diesel Torque Converter Problems
I have a 1999 F250 Super Duty Powerstroke diesel. It is currently at the Ford dealership initially because of a grinding type noise from the tranny. The truck is louder than normal. There also appears to be a small slip or surge when you going up a small grade. Well..the Ford dealership initially told me to get it fixed right away that the flywheel was damaged and the bolts around it may be cracked. Ok so went forward with the fixing it...Next they call because this was not the problem. After further investigations it is the torque converter. They informed me that Ford has come out with a better torque converter and that it would be a day to order this one. Does anyone know if this is a problem that is chronic for the 99 Ford?? Also what type of damage has this done to the tranny. They are going to remove any steel shavings, drain, etc. But is this the beginning of a night mare?? We use our truck to pull horses alot...it has 109,000. The mechanic stated that 109,000 was a lot of miles, I told him that he was crazy, this truck is just broke in. We still love our FORD. Thanks

The tranny has always been a weak link in the PSD.
Especially if you are pulling a trailer without an additional tranny coolers, deep pan, modules, regular maintenance, etc.
If you are not in a hurry to get your truck on the road, I would check out this company for tranny or torque convertor work;

Thanks for the information, but unfortunately we need our truck. We are just thankful that it did not break down this month while we were on the road. We have two trips to make on is 3 hrs and the other is 12 hrs. Would not be nice to be away from home for that long. Will check out the site that you sent to us (much appreciated) in case we do need a complete tranny.
Thanks

My 99 is in the shop now at a local Ford shop for a Converter replacement. I had it there for a loss of power thinking Exhaust back pressure sensor or sensor tube. After all the diagnostics and 2 test drives all the mechanic and service mgr could come up with is a rattling and pre-scatter bombing T/C. Price? 340 parts and 620 or so labor. Total----960

I just bought a 99 PSD last summer. It made a loud grinding noise from the torque converter. The dealer changed it before I bought it. I looked at a few other PSD's anywhere from 50k-150k miles. They all made the same noise. I make my truck work, but I follow good maintenance considering what the truck is pulling. Go tranny cooler and a tranny module.
