Question on 4.2L exhaust

Hey guys, I'm looking to do my exhaust, and had a question about the stock setup. I just recently had to replace the tranny and had the whole exhaust off from the exhaust manifold back to the muffler and got a little confused. right behind the exhaust manifold on the piping, is what looks like a mini cat-conv on both sides. I say this because they look just like the main cats only about 1/4 the size. Are these really pre-cats, or are they just flex plates of some sort. Just wondering because of emissions and such for an aftermarket system.

any help is appreciated

They are pre-cats. They help heat the exhaust before it gets to the converters. It makes the converters more efficient.

would there be any downside to just cutting out the pre-cats completely? Or is that not recommended.

I would bet that would be a bad idea as far as passing emissions testing goes....unless it was replaced with something better.
