Buying a 2000 F250... Advice?
All - I am looking at a 2000 F250, regular cab, long bed XLT for sale here locally (upstate ny). The truck has the V10, 4x4, towing option and is in perfect condition with a clean carfax. It has 34k showing and is a one owner vehicle used for personal use only. I drove the truck and it felt great... took it to my mechanic and he blessed it.
I can get it for $19,500. Is this a reasonable price? I know this is somewhat of a subjective question and some of the answer will be based on what I want in a truck... but I want to make sure I am getting a reasonable deal. Is there anything I should inspect closely on this model/year?
Thanks!

Buying a 2000 F250... Advice?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-03 AT 09:22 PM (EST)]Welcome to FTE!:-)
Is the truck an automatic or stick?
Issues with the 2000 include: (mine is also a 2000)
1. Early 2000 models had some piston slap issues. You would know this if you started it cold. I believe it applied to those built prior to May '00
2. Most 2000's (and '99) have exhaust "flutter" which is simply an annoying noise from the "Y" pipe exhaust. The "cure" from Ford hurts mileage and performance. The real cure is new headers, or just live with it. You notice it usually from 1800 rpm- 2200-rpm +/-. It sounds like shaking a coffeee can full of pea gravel.
3. Some v8 and v10 engines spit spark plugs. It isn't common, but happens more frequently than Ford will let on. An extended warranty would be a good idea. New heads run $2400.00 OUCH. Its a crapshoot on this one.
4. Look at the VIN on the drivers side door frame. If it starts with the #1, it was made in Kentucky. If it starts with #3, it was made in Mexico
My truck has been great to date. Most of the guys on this board are happy with their trucks. Like all brands, there ARE lemons out there.
As far as the price goes, you may want to check Edmunds or Kelly websites. Simply plug in the options and numbers and it will give you wholesale and retail values of most used vehicles.
Good Luck

Make sure you listen to the engine when it is cold...See if it has Piston Slap...Early in the morning...Otherwise seems like a good price..
I have a 1999 F250 4X4 V10 Piston Slap is so loud it sounds like a diesel engine....last about 1 - 2 minutes...around 1100 RPMs it is most prevalent..

Pricewise, here in central PA, that is about what that truck is selling for. I was pricing used vehicles before buying my new one and the 1999's with the 5.4 were going for a little less or the same 19,500. Super Duties with the 7.3 PSD were going for 21-23K depending on mileage. If it is what you say it is, it's not a bad buy.

Price seems ok, could probably get them a little lower however by comparing the v10 price to some diesels that are out there. I personally really like the regular cab. I have a supercab and there can be a lot of flexing in the cab that you hear. Other than that, like everybody else says, check for the early morning piston slap (do it by test drive first thing in the morning). Good luck and I hope you enjoy the truck!
