Hi and welcome to FTE

I don't know what would be different between the years. It should be the same ad a 2WD F150 as well.

You can use a 4R70W transmission taken from any 1997 vehicle. The year is important though because there were some electrical changes in 1998 that would make a later model incompatible.

The 4R70W is used in:
  • F-150s
  • E-150s
  • Mustangs
  • Crown Victorias
  • V-8 Explorers
  • V-8 Mercury Mountaineers
  • Probably a few other Mercury and Lincoln vehicles as well.

pfogle is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
If you wanted to go to a better transmission you may think about the C6 (for non overdrive) or a 4R100 (E4OD)

You could find 4r70w's mounted in just about any V-8 Ford from 1996 or later. But as AJ pointed out, there were wiring differences and even a few clutch pack friction changes so be sure what you are getting matches up.
