95 F150 - MPG/Power too low

I've had a 95 F150 4x4 with a 300/5 speed for the past 3 years. I get a steady 13.5 mpg highway/in town, and I have trouble maintaining highway speeds (70 mph) up hills. This has been pretty consistant since I got this vehicle - but I've learned from others that I should expect better MPG and power.

It's tuned and has a K&N air filter, but needs a new fuel filter. Should I expect this or should I get better MPG, power?

I've got a '93 with the same specs. Mine has 3.08 gears. I replaced the stock muffler with a Dynomax, and that helped uphill performance a bit. I was actually able to hold highway speed and in some cases accelerate up hills. Still, not great, although I can cruise at 80MPH once it Slowwwwwly comes up to speed.

As far as MPG, I get a consistent 16, city/highway driving. Keeping it in tune with good parts helps a bit...

I'd recommend a Gibson Cat Back 3-inch system. Their single-exhaust aluminized steel system isn't very expensive, is good for a solid mile or mile-and-half on the gallon, and packs a punch you can feel. I'd spring for stainless if I had to do it over again. The single-system isn't terribly loud and goes on in an hour or so.

I have the same basic truck, 96 ext cab, 3.55 gears, 4x4, Full size fiberglass top. I just removed the muffler (30 LBS of useless weight)and put in a flex pipe. Cost was six dollars. Just a DAB louder. But a big improvement in the revs. The convertors are so restrictive it doesen't need a muffler.
You wont be dissapointed.
Yesterday while driving in the woods, a log popped up from the front tire and damaged my rear cat beond recognition. (too bad I carefully cut it off at the ends. A 3 inch down to 21/2 inch adapter and a flex pipe had me mobile again. Cost again under ten dollars. This time it is a little louder but hardley noticable. (not loud enough to bother the neighbors) but with some serious torque and a lot better REEEEEV. I drive in hilly two lane roads all the time. I can now hold steady on some pretty good grades from 55 MPH on up in fifth gear. Cheap and easy mods to make. If your not 100% satisfied (you will be)you can easily change back. Chris...

I have 2 F-150's both 302/autos, I have a 93 with a hypertech power module, a filtercharger, 8.6mm accel plugs and wires, and duals w/o mufflers and echo tips, a few other mods, I get a constant 19.56 mpg with it. My 89 has true duals and it gets about 12-13 mpg on the highway.

My truck gets btw 13 and 17mpg w 3:08 gears and 31.10.50 tires . Its mainly the gearing I think contributes to the lack of umphh . My cats also had and "accident" In the woods ...I think thats what it was ? Trust me , with those things out of commission , the low end torque is vastly improved as well as top end . I seriously doubt a properly tuned engine contributes any thing that the cats supposedly clean up ?

Someone did a test and found that only 4-5 hp is gained by removing the cat. I agree, they are pretty stupid! But law is law, and I don't feel like paying 10 grand as a fine!
