Fan Clutch removal

Just a note on the removal of the fan clutch on a 2.9L engine. This is also a tip that works for many other engines.

I could not get enough friction on the pulley to loosen the fan clutch. I was almost resigned to buying the specialty wrenches. While surfing the net looking at different wrench sets I realized that I only had to:

1. Drill a hole into a piece of steel
2. Remove one bolt from the pulley
3. Bolt the steel bar to the pulley
4. The bar now rotates until it rests on the head of the next bolt
5. This locks the pulley in place and allows me to apply the necessary torque to loosen the fan clutch shaft.

Outstanding tip.

Another way (that I have used and always work grate) is the Craftmen's "Strap Wrench" around the water pump pully. You'll have to remove the serpinteen belt and wipe off the water pump pully with a clean ragg. I've used this strap wrench on manny pullies and has never distorted or left mark one.

Thanks for the tip Mike632.
