overdrive klunk

I have a 84 ford, automatic with an overdrive transmission. whenever it shifts down into overdrive it really bangs in. Is there any adjustment for this or is this just the way it is on these trucks. I am afraid one day it is going to just snap something down there and my truck will be shot. I drive it in the regular drive (D) most of the time to avoid it and have no problems. The rpms don't drop at highway speeds but at least its a smooth ride.

Thanks, Stan

OVERDRIVE CLUNK

Does this clunk happen at all speeds when you engage OD?

i have the same exact problem. bangs into overdrive when you let off the throttle some. im nto sure abotu with your set up but ikknow with mine and the efi motor theres isnt a kickdown cable so to speak, its throttle pressure regulated. on mine on top of the throttle body theres another cable the comes from teh transmission. this is adjustable you can pull out the black tab on the side and pull the cale collar longer or let it retract shorter. shortenign it will cause it to shift harder in all gears and will make it not hold OD at all really. this is what i ended up with at first because i had an extended 1st 2nd shift. if you lengthen the cable itll shoft softer adn not as quick but it wont be violent. this takes up not only a band adjustment so to speak but it also tightens clutches that ma be slipping, im nto entirly sure how it works becaue i havent taken one apart yet but i know you can make a "blown" transmission feel liek new again playign with that cable.

that exactly what it does. as soon as I let off the gas when I am cruising at about 55 the rpms drop and the bang sets in.
it shifts in and out at other speeds also but not anything I am concerned about. I will take a look at the truck this weekend and check the cables and other stuff mentioned. thanks
