Changing oil pan gasket in 93 4.9 L -- a HEADS-UP

I posted a note below about noise from my pan after I changed the gasket. After a lot of spinning in circles and good advice from Paul and DoubleA I got it fixed.

I had dented the front of the pan when I was jacking it up. Apparently a 2x4 wasn't quite enough protection. Anyhow, I was able to fix it without removing the pan by tapping it at the ends of the crease until just enough of it popped out for things to clear.

I don't know if this is a danger on any pan other than the 93 because I discovered that this pan is different when I tried to get a metal reinforced gasket for it. They don't make one.

I didn't, at first, suspect that this would be a problem because a friend and I had too much Jack Daniels and severely dented a pan on an 84 inline six (I think it was a 300) and it never caused any problems.

Anyhow, if you make the same mistake now you know how to fix it.
