I read on here somewhere about early heads being availible at Autozone. what heads are avalible and what should one ask for. The engine they will go on is a '76 460 from a lincolin markIV. Cheers, Boss429

I can walk right in my local Autozone and order a pair of C9XX heads for a $150.00 each with a $50.00 core charge on each. But you have to have the exact same head for the core. In other words a C9XX head for a C9XX head.

These are the same as the infamous D0VE heads.

Superdave, Thanks for responding. So I can't trade the heads off of the '76 for the d0ve heads, right? Will they sell me the heads without the core? And are these bare heads or complete? Thanks again, geo

you would just have to pay the $50 core charge for each head. So instead of $300 for the heads, you'd pay $400. Do you think those guys at autozone would ck the #s though when you return the cores?

01RangerSC explained it right.

And yes they are complete and ready to install when you walk out the door.

I think $400 is a great price for fresh heads, but I'd be tempted to tear them down and check everything twice. Are they still doing most of their rebuild stuff in Mexico or domestic with $8/hr rebuilder assembly line labor?

When did the factory begin using hardened 'unleaded' valve seats?

My 89 coachmen has a carbed 460, but the john deere chassis was built in 87. I was told Ford didn't go hardened seats on 460 until the FI models.

When I bought a intake gasket set for a 89 'F350' I received a FI gasket, so thats when I found out I had a 87 460.

I would like to try to trade my heads in for a set of rebuilt hardened seats heads.

Hardened valve seats have been in the heads since the early 70's.

**the john deere 460 is a dso engine and did not have the seats changed ford didn't do it until they fuel injected**

The previous statement is attributed to proford460 in another thread on this board.

Shows to go ya, some do, some don't and some wish they could get rid of their ferd before something else takes a ****

What ever you do, stay away from MCH rebuilts at the zone. I went thru ordering a couple of pair before I threw my hands up in disgust. 6 out of 8 exhaust mounting holes were heli-coiled, not only were the valves different btwn each head, there were different valves on the same head. One even had some piece of huge staple slammed btwn the valve and seat.

The Longmont Autozone (thanks Sonny!) came thru for me and ordered a pair of ReCon brand rebuilts, at no extra charge to me.

MCH are 199.99 plus 25 core
ReCons are 249.99 plus 125 core, but so much more worth the price.
