4r70w torque converter clutch slips

I have a 94 F150 with 5.0 and 4r70W auto trans. The torque converter clutch disengages when I am on the highway and I start up a hill. When this happens it will not reingage for the remainder of the time I am driving it. Eventually the "off" light on the shifter starts blinking and the transmission goes into some kind of "safe mode" and it doesn't shift smoothly.
The truck has a lot of miles on it so I don't want to invest any money into a new torque converter or transmission. Except for the converter the transmission works perfectly.
I don't mind if the torque converter clutch never engages (though the gas mileage bites). Is there some way I can disable the clutch so it never tries to engage and the shifter light doesn't come on?
