Ok, I also have a 4.0L sohc engine, but the picture looks totally different from mine. I have a 1992 and i used the picture but couldnt find my IAC valve. If anyone knows or has a 1992 and can tell me where the IAC is on my truck, it would be cool. A picture would be better than describing.... Thanks.

Dying when shifted into reverse?
My wife's 98 sohc 4.0 every onece in a great while will die when you back up and stop then put in drive. It runs really good most of the time and this has only happened about 5-6 times last year. At idle it sometimes seems as if it is going to die then goes back up to normal, a little shutter, or stutter than smoothes out. Could this be the same thing, just not totally bad yet?

4.0Beast, you have a 4.0 ohv engine in your 92. The IAC is located on the driver's side of the throttle body. It looks similiar to the one in the above pictures.
FireMarshal, the IAC might be your problem, and that's where I'd start. Try cleaning it and spray the shaft (where it goes into the solenoid housing) with WD-40. If it only stalls when shifting into/out of park or reverse, the trouble could also be in the neutral safety switch.

Turns out its not the IAC, i had my check engine light diagnosed at autozone, and it came up as the right O2 sensor. I went ahead and bought 2 of them, will replace them tomorrow. He said they are responsible for running too rich/lean, and its also related to my low idle/stall problems.....

Just another note about the IAC cleaning thing...wolfmeister has a piont about getting solvent in the solenoid (and thus, electircal stuff). After removing the IAC, remove the two phillips screws holding the valve body to the solenoid. CAREFULLY remove the valve body.
Clean valve and shaft by soaking in solvent (I prefer brake cleaner) for about 30 minutes, then drying THOUROUGHLY with low pressure air. CAREFULLY put it back in the solenoid. I don't recommend cleaning anything in the solenoid housing as solvent may get into the coil.
I started experiencing this problem a about a year ago and after testing (per wolfmeister's process except I used a Ford service manual), I ended up cleaning the valve after all electrical tests passed.
That was a year ago and no problems since.
Just my two cents.

hello all. im a newbie here. ill say thanks in advance for all the usefull info provided here to work on my truck
97 explorer 4.0 sohv motor.
got a question though. just got a new idle air control valve about 5 mins ago. went to the company that made its website to match up part # out of curiousity cause it looked different than my stock one. on mine there is a black **** that turns. not sure what it is,looks like an adjustment ****. but the new one just has a steel cap on top.

the one shown for the 6 cyl has **** and the 8 cyl has a metal cap. the box says the 6 cyl part # but the IACV looks like 8 cyl model.
so my question is before i put it on, whats the **** for and whats the difference between the 6 and 8 models.? will it mess anything up? the guy at the auto parts store said it would work. figured id check with the experts here first.

you are probably right about the air vent thing. i have haynes manual and searched many forums online about it and came up with nada.
i went out in the snow storm here to match it up.(im hard headed like that).
matched up fine, holes lined up. only thing is the connection where you plug wires in is aimed straight up, which might not let the plastic cover to be put back on the engine. is there a way to twist the solenoid part to the right like the factory one is?
also is the part for v8 and v6 different?
