That's a little lower than the other, but you'll definately save your engine by doing that. I wouldn't go after it until I got the tach-o-meter though.

Yes, it's completely safe. My truck is a 5 speed. It has an RPM gauge on the gauge panel. My truck will make it to 90 in 3rd if I really floor it. If I went around doing that all the time, it wouldn't be good for the truck. If I only do it when I race, it's just fine.
You redline at about 5400 RPM's, and I'm at 80 at like 4900. It's screaming, but that's how you beat 'em!

see thats why i need a tach....u know what dont make any damn sense to me?? putting a tach on an auto and not on a stick...why the heck do they need to see their RPM we really need it to keep from blowin the engine up...i dunno i think its a Ford mess up...ill have to look into gettin one but they all look too gaudy hangin off the pillar or on the dash...i have the Autometer monster tach with shift light on my mustang but that looks ok cause its sposed to be fast

The XL does not come standard with a tach. The XLT does. Regardless of auto or 5 speed.
There's another way to get an engine speed readout. Before you put the key in the ignition, hold down the trip mileage button. Then, while continuing to hold the button down, start the truck. Keep holding until you see the odometer flast GaGe TeSt. Then release the button. You can then use the button to scroll through various test until you eventually get to tach readout, which will be on the odometer. it will read tAc 0800, for example at idle. Enjoy!

there are several threads in the 4.2 forum on tachs and shift points. Do a search on "tach" and you'll find them.
Here is one that includes a link to a web site with good info on the odometer used in "test" mode.
Hope it helps.

Wow,
learn something new every day. I never knew our trucks had that feature. That's pretty cool. However, my truck is an auto so I really don't need the tach, even though mine came with one.
At full throttle, my truck will shift at about 5200 rpm. Man, I drive it like this all the time. My truck sees 5200 at least 15 times per day. Geez, I hope I don't blow the thing up! I drive pretty mellow most of the time but when i want to pass someone, my foot goes to the floor and bam, right up to 5200 every time.
