Ignition switch on 89 F150 5.0 Liter

Can someone help me please? I'm having trouble installing the ignition switch on my 1989 F150 this is the one that mounts to the steering colunm underneath the dash not the key switch. I removed the faulty old switch and installed the new one per the haynes repair manuals instructions (so I thought). Once in place I adjusted the switch to its midpoint, but when I tighten it down and turn the key switch it don't work, it's like the actuator arm between the key switch and the ignition switch is to short but I know that isn't it. If I take the two screws that hold the switch in place off and manually move the ignition switch the truck starts fine.

I find it easier to have the key cyl in the locked position and put the switch in the same position when installing. If you need to adjust it just loosen the screws and slide it a little.

I tried having the steering wheel in the locked position the key cyl. and the ignition switch also in the lock position but when I turn the key it seems as if there just isn't enough throw in the key switch. Could there be some mechinism that isn't allowing the actuator arm to travel its full distance to the start position?

Could be the rack but, those normally don't wear, they break. Try sliding it a little more up the column. Is that a tilt column?
