2-qt oil filter for 460?

Any experience with that? Are they cost-efficient? Bad idea?

2 quart version of the wix filter.
Wix part #51773.
(NAPA #1773)

The thread size and gasket size is the same, but the filter is almost twice as long.

Same oil filter as for a 89 f-700 with a 429 or a 370.

Thanks capre_diem. I was just thinking about looking for a larger oil filter as a way to allow greater oil capacity for more cooling and greater filtration to avoid clogging and potential bypass situation. I don't want a dual filter setup as there is a lot to hook up, but a larger can would be no extra work. BTW, the stock FL-1A seems to hold about 26 oz, so the one you mention, I suspect would be 1.5 qt. But I am going to check it out. The key is that the threads are the same type, the gasket is the same diameter, and whether the vehicle has the bypass valve in the filter or in the engine. But the number you posted apparently is spec'ed for the FL-1A use.

I just bought one of the Wix filters you listed. It was expensive, but that may be because I went to an old fashioned type auto parts store ($11). Hopefully they are cheaper at Autozone. The parts guy knew exactly what I was talking about and told me it is the exact same as the shorter filter, except of course for the extra filtration. The standard FL1A Motorcraft is about 4.75 inches long and the Wix 51773 is about 6.4 inches long, but may have a bigger end bump. The Wix 51773 figures to about one quart. Not sure it will make a significant difference as far as extra cooling capacity and filtration could be improved merely by running two standard filters sequentially during an oil change--but the thing would look good hanging off the side of the block. Also, the Wix seems to be better constructed as the seam between the end plate and the can appears to be stronger. Anyway, thanks again for the tipoff.

Cool! I'll have to try one of those on my truck. So it's just the same as an FL-1A, only longer?

Most chain parts stores in my area (Pep Boys, Murrays, Auto Zone) don't stock this filter and won't order it. However, yesterday I went to Advance Auto Parts. They stock it in Fram for $5.98, and can order the Purolator for $5.98 or A/C Delco for $3.something. Here are the numbers

Puro L40017
A/C Delco 2142 (forgot the leading letters)
Fram PH977A

For 5.98 I'm going over to these full time on the Motorhome and my F150. Aerostar 3.0 graduates from a Motorcraft FL400S to a FL-1A too (another post coming).

UPDATE: I contacted Purolator. The relief valve (bypass) tension is exactly the same in both the L30001 (FL-1A equivalent) and the longer L40017, but the gallons per minute flow rate for the L30001 is 4, whereas for the L40017 is 7!

Also, some discrepancy in the AC number. Parts store's computer shows the 2142, but the Purolator L40017 box shows cross reference of AC # PF881. The Purolator cross ref also includes the Motorcraft as FL299.

Also, I can still use my stock of FL-1A's on my wife's Aerostar which specs a tiny FL-400S at only 3 gpm, but same return spring tension. So all my vehicles get bigger filters now.

I also contacted Wix re the 51515 (FL-1A cross ref) and the bigger 51773. Their reply (with names removed):

Both of these filters contain filter bypass valves set at 8-11 psid and have flow capabilities of 7-9 gpm. Thank you for your inquiry.

I believe if you ask a guy at the parts counter for a filter for a 89 F700 with a 429 you will get the big filter.

next oil change I'm going to use the oversize napa1773 on the 302.

Heres a Equation For all Of us Napa Filter guys . If you notice the only real diffrence in the wix and napa numbers is the 5 before the napa number For example a wix 51515=a Napa 1515

Since some of us are putting these bigger oil filters on our trucks I thought I'd throw this out:

I called some truck parts places. There is a place near my called Motor City Truck--Ford/Sterling. They carry several filter brands I am unfamiliar with. One is Fleet Guard (he said it is made by Cummins). I gave him the Motorcraft #FL299 and he said the FleetGuard LF697 fits. He sells them for about $6 each. Figuring the best price I have seen yet on the bigger filter is a Purolator L40017 at $5.98 on special order, this Fleet Guard may be worth while as they carry them in stock. So check out your local truck part stores.

BTW: Opinions or data on quality of Fleet Guard filters?

I just put a Napa 1773 filter on my '92 explorer. It worked great. It also makes it easier to get to, since I can get an easier hold of it now.

I've used Fleetguard filters on my heavy trucks for years, including not just oil but water and fuel. Never had any problems and oil analyses always looked good as far as filter function. Presently I'm using them on my Bobcat and on the 300 in my F150. IMO, if the price is right, I don't think you'll be disappointed about the filter service compared to any other brand.
