I was at a local truck accessories dealer yesterday and was asking about a spray in bedliner for my`79 f100 longbed (bed is mint) the price was $390 under the rail and $490 over the rail (ouch) I politelely said thanx and continued snooping. I went by a
auto body shop 3 miles down the road and asked them, beleave it or not it was $275 with a lifetime warranty, I asked how much it was for over the rail and he looked at me like I was from mars, he said the cost is the same. I started B.S.ing about the other prices and asked if there`s was a different material and he said that it`s all the same, your only paying for name brand and he buys his in bulk from the same place everybody else dose i.e. Rhino..
He took me into the shop and showed me a truck with one of there liners and it`s awesome,I`m not an expert in spray-in coatings just wanted to share this little experience with you...
Not all liners are the same I use only linex in the jeeps I restore because they dont fade look at www.lucasrestorations.com I have a few on there that I restored and linexed Look at a truck with a 2 year old rino liner in it & it will be chalky and faded.BUT!!! it is not cheep by no means. well good luck & I like the web site this was my first visit I am bulding a 79 150 supre cab 2wd 460 .
Lucas, the liner is thinner than most I`ve seen, it dosen`t have a rubbery feel to it, it feels more hard like a plastic, any clue what kind of material it is??
Line-X is heated and high pressure not allot of other companies are, there are over 480 Line-X's around USA and even some out of the country. Line-X is much larger than Rhino, I know the chemist that started Rhino his name is Jay Roth. Rhino buys from a manufacture in Ontario and Line-X is made by "BASF" Line-X is also the only company that is widely approved for the "DOD" dept. of defense. Go to a site called Paxcon.com it will show you the 25 mill. Contract Line-X got on the US Pentagon. I had a chance to by a Rhino Liner in Temecula for about 60 grand and believe me when I say there is a difference in product they have 2 different types they shoot one is duraspray which is cheaper than cheep and the other is tough stuff. They mix the two sometimes to lower there product cost. I know this because one of there main guys no works for me. So if you got R-H-I-N-O or "Knock off" ask them to use a thing called an elcometer to tell you how thick it is. They can’t because they don’t want to know, and it is never "Up to 1/4 inch thick" up to is there key term.
To answer your question they are both polyurethanes but they are completely different ISO and RES that make up the key components of the urethane. The consistency of any low pressure system differ so much that never two liners are the same. High pressure on the other hand, mixes at the tip of the gun with a 1:1 and is usually within 1/25 of the exact 1:1 ratio every time meaning all liners are consistently the same. Low pressure such as R-H-I-N-O or others have to hand mix there products then they only have a certain amount of time before it sets up. Which makes for very inconsistent spray? If you were to compare the specs on other to Line-X then you would see that Line-X closest competitor in concrete.
You got low pressure not to many high pressures left because the cost of equipment and material cost more that what you paid. To break even most high pressure people can't charge lower than 299.00 under the rail and keep there doors open at least legitimately. I know spray liner is having money problems and they charge 275 and do around 125 trucks a month. And they have no overhead.
thanx for all the replies, I hope it keeps the bed from ever rusting,
I hate rust, chevys, and dodges, but jeeps and internationals are cool, my 2nd Ex-wife is OK to..
