is really on its last leg. It has 235,XXX miles on the 302. She runs smoothe, and still has lots of power, but the transmission slips. I'm not sure if I want to have the transmisson rebuilt, or just buy an older Explorer. Im not sure what transmisson it has, but I think its the 4spd overdrive auto. The trucks a supercab with the towing package. Would I be better off buying a new car?

Yep, sure enough, that truck has had it. If you want, just lock it up and send me the signed title and keys with a note of where it is and I will get it out of your way pronto, and not charge you a thing to do it.

LAST EDITED ON 03-Feb-01 AT 05:08 PM (EST)[p]That truck has 235k miles??!?!? I've seen several and they don't look half that good. If I were you, I would just replace the transmission. There's several ways to go about doing this. You can have your's rebuilt, buy a rebuilt (probably the same $$$), get a new one, or buy one from a dismantlers. Your truck would either have the E40d (has cancel switch on shifter) or the AOd which has Od,D,1 gears... I saw a E40d out of a 96 F-150 with 70k for $300. I don't consider that bad.

As far as buying a explorer. They probably won't get any more mileage than your F-150 gets, and you may be buying someone elses trouble. I've heard of stories from earlier Explorers.

and explorers just suck...my mom has a `96 and it has no guts, 16-18 mpg with a v6, body sways like a pregnant whale and is really hard to keep it tracking in a straight line at highway speeds.

yeah, it has that many miles (good maintenance ). the only major problems i've had are the transmission, passanger side powerwindow, shift rod in the steering column and the fuel tank selctor switch. Im thinking of going with a smaller car, and rebuilding my transmission.

A good small car to look for/at is the Honda Accord's. I know several with around 200k that are still all original. They're cheap, easy to find parts for.
