Question EGR Tube

89 F250, 7.5L The EGR tube needs to be replaced. From what I can see there is just one nut on each end of the tube. Just unscrew each nut and it should come off. Am I right here? I have been spraying them with a penetrating lubricant in hopes that will help with the removal.

One more question...Is there some kind of a temporary fix I can use on this tube? I would like to bring the truck thru emissions, and more than likely fail, and then fix the tube. Fixing the tube after failing should count as part of the repairs.

Thanks for any input you have.

I'm assuming it has a hole in it? If so as a TEMPORARY measure you may be able to use some muffler-patch on it to get you pass the emission inspection. Muffler-patch should be available at most auto-parts stores.
Any exhaust related equipment can be a real bear to remove since they are subjected to constant high heat, sweat, and rust. If your not very mecanicaly inclined I would leave the removal of the tube to a good mechanic. When I switched from stock exhaust to headers, the only way I could get my tube off was to use a torch under the hood to heat the nuts to a cherry-red. Definetly a possible fire-hazard!
Good luck,
Deen

re EGR tube

Actually the tube is broken in half. I was thinking of the muffler patch stuff too. Wrapping that around the tube and also putting a splint on it. And then more wrap. I've heard about cutting the tubes close to the nut so you can get a socket in there vs a wrench. One of my delimas is ....if I do cut the tubes and still can't loosen the nut, can I still drive it to a shop (1 mile away) without doing any kind of damage?

You'd probably be O.K. for a mile. The only thing I'd worry about is catching something on fire with the hot exhaust gasses venting on a greasy/oily engine/firewall. Carry a fire-extinguisher just in-case or have someone tow you that short distance.

You can also thread some bolts into those holes for that short trip. Not sure if your holes are pre-threaded or not, I have run across blocks with both. The cracked block I just took out of my truck had those threads, the new one I'm putting in does not. But it's an idea.
