410vs 390 for racing

Hey guys got a question?? Which would be better to build to stroke a 390 with a 428 cam and bore .060 or build a 12:1 compression 390 .060 over. Not to worried about compression just want a good race engine. Probably going to run cast heads which are ported and have the larger valves, they are 67cc heads. I going to put it in a '66 ford stepside, wanting to get it in the 12's in the quarter. Got any suggestions let me know??

Running: c-6 automatic 2600 stall
Edelbrock Performer RPM
headers etc.

Either can get you into the 12's. The 390 is just going to like more gear and wind a little higher than the 428. If you have the 428 crank then by all means use it but they are kinda hard to come by if you don't.

Sounds like fun!! The problem is going to be getting the power to the ground. It might be better to build the 390 which won't have as much torque as the 428 to allow the tires to grab at the start line. Instead of spinning them up in smoke!! Then the HP of the 390 will carry you down the track without running out of wind at the top end. Just a thot, I have run both and the 428 has way more torque. Good luck and keep us posted!

I agree, if this is going to mostly a strip truck, save the money needed to go 428 and put it into the top end.

Trucks have an inverse problem to most drag cars, in that they don't have the weight to handle the off-line launch and they need more HP to overcome the air resistance at higher speeds.

Good luck hitting 12s. That is ambitious for a truck. Put the truck on a diet and build the 390 to spin 6500 RPM. Add a locker and the biggest stickiest tires you can fit and afford.

I read an article on a web site that had a truck Identical to mind but was running a 422( a stroked 390) that ran a 12.7 @107 in the quarter so I believe I can can get it. I plan on installing a fiber glass hood and fenders to lighten the front, i am running 28 inch tall slicks and 4:22 posi-track, but the engine will have to wait till next year just tryng to get a head start on what I want to build, Right know I have a 390 bored .040 over with ported heads 10:1 compression and a Comp 292 cam have not run it yet but will soon once I get it back together, had to put it on hold, but am know getting started again, have to let you know what it does!!http://www.geocities.com/spookytruck/ check out the 1966 stepside!!! it is on "Our Favorite Fe Page 2"

Well the first time it ran great. BUt I lost oil pressure and burned up three lifters and lobes, so I have the engine torn down, luckly Comp replaced my cam for me, I Believe I have traced the problem to my oil pump cause my pressure slowly dropped. Comp thinks I might of had to long of push rods so I am going to check that on the new install. but when it was running it ran GREAT could not complain only got to put 60 miles on it. My engine would turn 6500 rpm with ease!!!

Well I had good oil pressure just a real loud knock so I am assumming my crank bearings are ok, my cam bearings looked good and everything else looked good so I believ I did not hurt anything just kinda freak accident, but that thanks on the oil info. I pulled the heads and their really wasn't the much metal in the oil so i believe the filter and screen got it all but I am going to clean it out and change my oil pump anyway
