The plugs only blow out after they have been left in there too long and the threads get stipped when they do get removed. Once that happens the plugs won't hold the correct TQ so the heads need helicoils or they will develop the blowout problem.
If you manage to avoid getting an engine with this problem then it's no contest, the 5.4 makes more HP nd TQ than the I6 could ever dream of.. and it won't be completely handicapped with the rediculous gear ratios many of the I6 trucks got.

Actually the 3V's are the ones that have issues if the plugs are left in too long. The 2V's have a problem spitting plugs when the new plugs aren't properly torqued when installed. $400 is about right for a plug change on a 5.4L, 126K however should have been the second time they were changed. A 300 is one Ford engine I have never dealt with but only heard good things about them, the 5.4L has a lot more HP and a good 100+ more lb-ft of torque.
