Does a dually need a spare tire?
I just replaced my 1990 F250 S/C with a F350 4X4 Crew Cab Dually with Alcoa aluminum wheels for hauling my slide-in camper. I noticed that it does not have a spare tire under the bed. There is not a spare tire carrier and there are no marks indicating there ever was one. I do have a jack under the hood which looks like it has never been used. My initial thought was that I definitely need a spare but on second thought maybe I could limp home with a flat on the rear or switch tires if the flat was on the front to get home. My question is did these trucks come with spares (if so the carrier must be special because of the shape of the wheel) and finally do I need one? Thanks for any advice.

You can certainly do it that way, but what if you're a long way from home and have a flat on the rear? 1)You're liable to ruin a tire that could have been fixed, and 2) if it's a long enough run to the house you could easily ruin the flat's match mate by heat created by the original flat thereby having two flats on the same side rear. I'd think the question would answer itself just at the thought of having to rotate all your tires if you did have a flat on the front.

In some of the northern states folks like to pull the spare tire carrier out from under the truck and throw the spare in the bed just as soon as they get it hone from the dealer. It should have come with one. I have a 95 F350 XLT CC/DRW that I bought as a parts truck for mine. It has one under it but it is mangled all to pieces. I would check the wrecking yards. Hope this helps.

Are Ford 16" Dually wheels the same size as GM/Dodge? WRT to bolt circle; offset; center hole dia.?
I'd like to find a spare myself and it would simplify it if I happen to come across a single wheel other than a Ford.

The wheels do not interchange. The wheel uses the center hole to center and hold the wheel, GM uses a smaller center and will not fit, Ford will not fit GM either as you can not center the wheel since the stud holes are too big. You need to find a wheel off a Ford from 86 up. 85 back uses what is called "in and out pattern" meaning the holes are tapered and everyother one is off set.
And yes it is suppose to have a spare. You can find a spare holder in a wrecking yard. There are two holes in the frame that hold the carrier in place.
I can email you picts if you like.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the info, I thought all of the dually bolt patterns were the same myself. I thought offset was the major difference. Haven't seen you around much. Business must be good. Did you find another project truck yet? Take care and have fun.

Hey Brad, most people think the same thing about the duallies, but they are very different, prior to 86 ford and dodge used the same wheels, but ford went to a wheel that looks like a GM, in 86, but is different in the size of the center and bolt holes. Thats why ford now uses a flange type nut.
