Question What to do??

Im in a hell of a spot, i made a mistake i think when i bought this truck. Its a 4.2L 6cyl and its ok but im really spoiled when it comes to HP and SPEED, i really made a big mistake but the truck was really good looking, 4 door ext cab flare side with 20" rims and some mods. I bought it used of course but i have been having this weird "tick tick tick tick" noise at idle and with my old V-8's that meant push rod or lifter but im at a loss for ideas on this one...my shop said it was the idler pulley on the timing chain?? i know i have one of those on my CBR900RR motorcycle and its called a timing chain tensioner, but a truck? ive built engines with timimg chains and theres no tensioner...i think they are screwin with me(the shop is the one the dealership i got it at runs).....im not sure about this truck and i screwed myself on this one but does anyone else have a "ticking" noise in their engine at idle or when lettin out the clutch at low RPM? also can this POS be built to give some more HP without spending alot of $$?? please try to help if you can i'd appreciate it...

James,

Come on! Read your own quote. The 4.2 is a great motor.

Everyone has that stupid "tick, tick, tick" That's the natural sound of the motor. You can quiet down quite a bit if you run 5w30 in it, that's what I did. My Yamaha Vstar 1100 makes the same ticking noise, and I even adjusted the valves and it still made that noise. It's not the valves, it's just the sound of the motor.

Run 5w30, an Airaid intake and dual Flowmaster 40's out the back and you won't hear a thing. I'm sure you looked at my picture gallery already.

Do what you said you were going to do and you can make that thing smoke V8's. You won't get the torque feeling from your 6 as you would from the 5.4, but i'm close to beating lightnings in the 1/4 mile.

As Rob Schnieder would say....."YOU CAN DO IT!"

James,

I just looked at the pictures of your truck.

I see your first problem already! What diameter are those custom wheels???????

You put a larger diameter wheel on a V6 that happens to have an overly large 1st gear??

NO NO NO NO. If anything, you should be going much much smaller.

Ok, you HAVE to drop your diff gear ratio down to at LEAST a 4.10. I might even go more if your going to keep those wheels on there. That's step number one.

Step two? Diablo Delta chip. This will give you an instant tire spinning boost the second you hit the gas...trust me. Get one from Ken at Motorhaven.com. He is the administrator of this site.

Step three? Intake and exhaust.

You can work your way from there. But your biggest problem is those wheels and tires. Get rid of them or drop your gears down.

I agree with Tom about the modifications to make. The newer 4.2's are excellent engines and are fairly reliable. My 2001 4.2 is approaching 50,000 miles and is running strong, even with the ticking noise, which you shouldn't worry about. The 4.2 can definately compete with the 4.6 and 5.4. I raced my friend's Expedition (briefly, nothing illegal, just a short distance) and from around 0-40 mph I had him. His Expedition is heavy and only had the 4.6, but still with a few modifications, I wouldn't be surprised if the 4.2 beats a V8.

James,

I don't have Aim but I have MSN messenger at tom94vette@hotmail.com or you can just email me there.

I will be at Biketoberfest but I'm not going up til Sunday probably.

I'll just take a really fast ride up on the Huyabusa for the day and come back the same day. I may go up Saturday night.

Email me if you want about any questions about your truck or maybe hook up for a ride. I've been dying to take the bikes to EBOR City. I've been there a bunch of times but never on the bikes. I missed the last EBOR bike week.

That's why I like Bike Week better, they have the better vendor coral. Lot's of cheap stuff. I hold off buying leathers and accessories all year just so I can shop at the vendor coral at the speedway.

I need a pair of leather pants to zip up to my Vanson jacket. Perferated with knee pucks if possible, and in all black to match my bike and my Vanson. Size 32-34 waist (depending on how they run).

Have anything??
