Question 4.2L the same as 3.8L?

I ahve read alot about the 4.2L in a F-150 has the same build as a 3.8L in a Mustang. Is this possiable? If so does that mean I can buy parts for a 3.8 and put them on my 4.2?

The '97+ 4.2L is basically the same as the '01+ 3.8L in Mustangs. The stroke is longer in the 4.2 which gives you that extra 0.4L of displacement. The upper and lower intakes are different (although they can be interchanged).
The 99-00 3.8L's are also very similar. I think the only difference is that 99-00 3.8's are externally balanced while the 4.2's are neutrally balance. Also the 99-00's don't have IMRC's (I think the 4.2L's have them, correct?)
The 3.8's in earlier Mustang's (94-98) and Thunderbird's (89-97) have a completely different single-port intake. You can change back to a single port intake (not that you'd want to, unless you wanted to use the supercharger off of a T-Bird SC)
But, yeah they're basically the same motors. A few of us Mustang guys have "borrowed" your crankshaft to get some more cubes out of our engines

Also, to answer your question, yes, you can buy most parts for the 3.8 for our 4.2. (ie: throttle bodies, headers, intakes, and a bunch of other stuff)

try these sites:

www.rpm-mustangs.com
www.motorhaven.com
www.seffects.com

these are 4 different sites you can search for parts for our trucks as well as parts for the 3.8 to fit our 4.2. Good luck with searching and with the mods.

OH YEA! AND WELCOME TO FTE!

Does anybody on here actually have headers designed for a Mustang on their truck? I have no doubt that it will bolt up fine, but will it clear your K-Member (and transmission for anyone with LT's)? Sorry not very familiar with what the engine compartment is like on F-150's

*Edit - And for you hardcore guys try Morana V6 Racing and Super Six Motorsports
