ABS Motor

Over the last couple of months I had been getting the ABS light coming on every once and awhile. It got to the point it would come on every couple of days, there was the ABS kicking in lightly coming to a stop on pavement, and kind of like the sound of a tire skipping along gravel or something coming from the front driver side tire. I'm kind of suspecting the ABS motor from what was going on and Midas agreed with me over the phone. I'm taking it in on Friday. But if it is the ABS motor, how much would it cost to replace? Thanks!

Ummm, maybe I'm missing something but I've never heard of an ABS motor before. I would try talking to a different shop.

It could be something simple like a bad wheel sensor or faulty wiring. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be bad wiring to a rear wheel sensor. The wiring was grounding out against the frame causing the ABS to activate at low speeds.

Any shop should be able to pull the ABS trouble code and give you an idea of what may be wrong.

Good luck.

yes, there is an ABS motor. its a beefer electric motor used to operate a 'pump' that builds pressure inside each required wheel end (channel). it also excavates any fluid from the module's accumulators after a pressure 'dump'.

what year/make vehicle? i'm very familiar w/ MY02 and up ABS on Explorer based lines...

st1 is right tho... in most cases its a poopy sensor or wiring break.

if you get the DTC's pulled, you'll be that much closer to resolution.

Just curious - where is the pump located? I'm assuming its just downstream from the master cylinder. I've been lucky enough to avoid running into it yet.

its part of (attached to) the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit)... yes, downstream from TMC. just follow your brake lines (from TMC) to the module.

Thanks for the replies! It's a 93 Ex with an automatic trannsimion and the 4-wheel ABS. I was hoping to get the codes with a friends reader but it wasn't the right one so I'll find out on Friday. If the diagnosis was correct I was just hoping to get an idea of how much it would cost before I went in. Thanks again.
